파리올림픽이 마지막 하계올림픽?

지구촌 북반구(northern hemisphere)가 때 이른 폭염에 비명을 지르고(scream in an untimely heat wave) 있는 가운데, 내달 26일 개막할 파리올림픽이 ‘하계올림픽 종말의 시작(the beginning of the end for the Summer Olympics)’이 되리라는 전망이 나온다.

As the northern hemisphere is screaming in an untimely heat wave, the Paris Olympics, which will be held in July 26th, is expected to be the beginning of the end for the Summer Olympics.

극심한 더위(extreme heat)로 선수들이 쓰러지고, 최악의 경우(in the worst case) 사망할 수도 있다는 우려까지 제기된다.

It is concerned that the athletes will collapse because of extreme heat and could die in the worst case. 

영국·호주 스포츠 단체 보고서 ‘불의 고리(Rings of Fire)’에 따르면, 하계올림픽이 지구온난화(global warming) 탓에 더 이상 여름에 치를 수 없게 되면서 조만간 과거 유물(relic of the past)이 될 가능성이 커지고 있다.

According to the British Australian Association report 'Rings of Fire,' the Summer Olympics are likely to become a relic of the past as they cannot be held in the summer for global warming. 

당분간은 최고 기온을 피해(avoid the maximum temperature for the time being) 경기를 하겠지만, 결국엔 다른 계절로 옮겨질 수 있다는 얘기다. 

They will play the game, avoiding the maximum temperature for now, but it will switch to other seasons.

지구 온도가 계속 높아지면서 기후변화(climate change)가 급기야 스포츠에도 실존적 위협(existential threat)으로 닥친 것이다.

As the global temperature constantly soars, it finally poses an existential threat to sports. 

이번 올림픽은 100년 만에 파리에서 다시 열린다.

This Olympics will be held in Paris again for the first time in 100 years.

파리의 7~8월 기온은 지난 대회가 개최됐던 1924년보다 섭씨 3.1도 상승했다.

The temperature in July and August in Paris increased by 3.1°C compared to one in 1924 when the last Olympics was held.

2003년엔 살인적 폭염(deadly scorching heat)으로 프랑스 전역에서 최소한 1만4000명이 사망했고, 이후에도 기록적 더위(record-breaking temperature)가 이어져 2019년 7월 25일엔 역대 최고 기온인 42.6도를 기록했다.

At least 14,000 people died in 2003 all over France because of the deadly scorching heat, and the record-breaking temperature continued, which resulted in 42.6°C in July 25, 2019.

그로부터 5년이 지난 올해엔 예년보다 더 숨막히는 무더위(sweltering heat)로 ‘역사상 가장 더운 올림픽’ 기록을 경신할 것으로 예상된다.

This year, 5 years from then, is expected to have the hottest Olympics in history with sweltering heat. 

현재까지 ‘폭염’ 종목 ‘금메달’은 섭씨 34도를 기록했던 2020 도쿄올림픽이 보유하고 있다.

The gold medal in heat wave goes to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which had 34°C. 

기온으로는 2004 아테네가 34.2도로 가장 높았으나, 습도까지 70%에 달해 최악의 조건으로 악명 높았던(be notorious for the worst conditions) 도쿄에 가산점이 주어지면서 ‘은메달’로 밀렸다.

The temperature was the highest in the 2004 Athens Olympics but pushed back to the silver medal since the Tyoko Olypmics got the bonus point with 70% humidity, known to be notorious for the worst conditions.  

높은 습도를 동반한 폭염은 신체가 체온을 식히려고(cool down) 애쓰는 와중에 현기증(dizziness), 탈진(exhaustion), 열사병(heat stroke)을 초래한다.

The heat wave with high humidity causes dizziness, exhaustion, and heat stroke while we suffer from cooling down our body temperature.

그런데 이번 파리올림픽은 기온 40도, 습도 80% 이상의 역대 가장 열악하고 위험한 조건에서 열릴(be held in the harshest and most dangerous conditions ever) 것이라는 예측이 나온다.

However, this upcoming Paris Olympics are expected to be held in the hardest and most dangerous conditions ever, with temperatures exceeding 40°C and 80% humidity.  

그럼에도 올림픽 후원 스폰서들은 최대한 많은 관중 동원과 가장 효과적인 광고 노출(most effective advertising exposure)을 위해 낮 시간 경기를 종용한다.

Nonetheless, the Olympic sponsors urge to play the daytime games for the most audiences and the most effective advertising exposure.

게다가 한여름에 말도 안 되는 설상가상(雪上加霜), 친환경을 이유로(for environmentally friendly reason) 선수촌에 에어컨이 아닌 선풍기만 설치할(install only electric fans in the athletes’ village) 예정이라고 한다.

To make matters worse, only electric fans will be installed in the athletes' village for environmentally friendly reasons.
