6·25 전쟁터에서 온 잃어버린 편지

한 편의 영화 줄거리처럼 들린다(sound like the plot of a movie). 하지만 시나리오나 허구(fiction)가 아니다.

It sounds like the plot of a movie. But it is not a novel nor a fiction. 

 6·25 전쟁 당시 한국에서 온 임자 잃은 편지(lost letters from Korea)가 마침내 집 찾아갔다는(find way home) 실화(true story)다.

It is a true story that the lost letters from the Korean War have finally found their way home.

캐나다의 한 젊은 부부가 돌아가신 남편 조부모에게 시골 농장 주택을 물려받는다(inherit a farmhouse).

A young couple in Canada inherits a farmhouse from their husband's late grandparents.

지난해 11월 24일 이사하던 날(on the day of moving in), 벽장을 청소하다가(clean out a closet) 옛 편지 한 무더기를 발견한다(come across a stack of old letters).

They came across a stack of old letters while cleaning out a closet on the day of moving in on November 24 last year. 

청춘 남녀 연애편지인 듯했다.

Those seemed to be love letters.

대공황 속에서 자라난(grow up in the Great Depression) 할아버지·할머니는 무엇이든 재사용하고 보관했던(reuse and store everything) 탓에 각자의 연애편지조차 버리지 않고 한편에 모아둔(keep their love letters in one corner) 것이리라 생각했다.

They thought that their grandfather and grandmother who grew up in the Great Depression had kept their love letters in one corner since they were used to reuse and store everything.

할머니가 할아버지가 아니라 한국전쟁 참전 중이던 위클리프 프레슬리 상병과 주고받은 편지들이었다.

Those were not the ones between grandmother and grandfather but between grandmother and Cpl. Wycliffe Leslie Presley, a soldier in the Korean War. 

편지 내용과 이것저것 따져 미루어보니(put two and two together) 연인 사이가 틀림없어 보였다.

I put two and two together, and they seemed to be a couple. 

‘사랑한다’는 말만 없을 뿐 더없이 절절했다.

It was ardent, though there was no word for 'I love you.'

빨리 전쟁이 끝나고 살아 돌아가(return alive) 만나고 싶다고 했다.

It said he would like to return and meet her alive when the war ends.

그때까지 기다려 달라고(wait until then) 했다.

And said wait until then.

알고 보니 프레슬리 상병은 결혼한 상태였고(be married), 갓 낳은 딸(newborn daughter)이 있었다.

The truth was that Cpl. Wycliffe Leslie Presley was married and had a newborn daughter then.

그리고 당시 20대였던 할머니와는 6촌 관계(second cousin)였다.

And he was a second cousin of my grandmother in her 20s then.

두 사람이 단순히 혈육으로 안부를 나눴던(exchange greetings through blood relations) 것인지, 금지된 사랑을 했던(have a forbidden love) 것인지는 지금까지 아무도 모른다.

Nobody knows until now whether they exchanged greetings through blood relations or had a forbidden love. 

현지 매체 BarrieToday에 따르면, 할머니가 받아본 마지막 편지는 프레슬리 상병에게서 온 답장(reply letter)이 아니었다.

According to local media Barrie Today, the last letter grandmother had was not a reply letter from Cpl. Wycliffe Leslie Presley.

우체국의 배달 불능 우편물 담당 부서(Dead Letter Office)에서 보내온 그녀 자신의 편지였다.

It was her letter from a dead letter office in a post office.

한국까지 배달됐으나, 그 편지를 받아볼 사람이 없어 되돌아왔다고 했다.

It was delivered to Korea but turned back since there was no one to receive the letter. 

“상병(Corporal) 위클리프 프레슬리. 1926년 1월 1일 캐나다 온타리오주(州) 출생. 1949년 12월 15일 입대(enlist in the army). 1952년 6월 26일 한국전쟁 참전 중 전사(戰死·killed in action). 사망 확인된(be verified deceased) 나이 26세. 한국 부산 유엔기념공원 안장.”

Corporal Presley.  Born Jan. 1, 1926, in Bourget, Ont., located east of Ottawa. He enlisted in the army on Dec. 15, 1949, in Kingston. Died June 26, 1952. His verified deceased age was 26. Presley is buried in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea. 

그는 1950년 결혼, 전사했을 당시 캐나다에 생후 8개월 된 딸이 있었다.

He was married in 1950 and had an 8-month-old daughter in Canada when he died in the Korean War.

벽장에서 편지들을 발견한 젊은 부부는 인터넷과 소셜미디어를 통해 고(故) 프레슬리 상병의 딸 메릴린을 찾아 나섰고, 얼마 전 한 여성에게서 자신의 시어머니(mother-in-law)인 것 같다는 연락을 받았다.

A young couple who found letters in a closet tracked Merlin, a daughter of a last Cpl. Presley, through the internet and SNS, and got a call from a woman who thinks that Merlin seems to be her mother-in-law.

부부는 최근 메릴린에게 72년 전 한국에서 전사한 아버지의 편지들을 모두 보내줬다.

The couple recently sent Merlin all the letters from their father who died in the Korean War 72 years ago.  

이미 70대 노인이 된(be already in her 70s) 딸에게 아빠가 직접 썼던 필체(handwriting)와 어투(way of talking)가 어땠는지 지금이라도 보고 느껴보라고.

For the daughter who already became in her 70s to see what her father's handwriting and way of talking were like.
